The new Samsung Galaxy S24 smartphones are available today for those who had pre-ordered. We’ll be updating our hands-on impression of the S24 Ultra soon. The early verdict: These are slick, polished devices with top-tier hardware. What distinguishes these phones from past models is Galaxy AI, which use generative AI to enhance the user experience.
You can find these AI-powered features under Advanced intelligence in the settings. They range from translation to generative edit for photos to webpage summaries. Basically, everything you’d expect from AI since ChatGPT. Samsung has helpfully added an icon (a trio of stars) to indicate these AI features in supported apps like the Samsung Internet Browser or the Photo Editor. Just click on the icon to get started. While there are plenty of AI features to explore, here are my favourite three so far. These are the ones that I believe folks will find useful in everyday situations.
My top pick by far is Circle to Search. Simply long press the home button or navigation bar to activate this feature. You’ll be able to tap or circle to select a text snippet or image to get more information via Google. As you can imagine, it’s very handy for images, especially with the S Pen on the S24 Ultra. I think it will be the most-used AI feature on these phones. Circle to Search is also coming to the Google Pixel 8 phones at the end of the month.
My second favourite is Chat Assist, which can translate, change the style, or correct your grammar and spelling in supported apps such as Samsung Messages, WhatsApp, and Instagram — if you use the Samsung Keyboard. It supports 13 languages, and you’ll have to download the language packs in advance.
I’m also a fan of Note Assist, which helps to format, summarise, translate, and check your notes in Samsung’s Notes app. Very useful to copy and paste a wall of text, and get a summary quickly. Note that some AI features, like the translation in Chat Assist, are processed on the phone, while others, like the summarise in Note Assist require an internet connection.
Some of these Galaxy AI features will also be rolled out to last year’s S23 series, as well as Samsung’s foldable phones later this year. But there’s a caveat, though. While these AI features are currently free till the end of 2025, Samsung may change this policy depending on circumstances then.
Besides trying the new Galaxy S24 phones, we also checked out Razer’s improved Iskur V2 gaming chair, as well as Prism’s updated OLED TV. Check them out below:
Thanks to a new lumbar system that’s adaptive, and adjustable, the much-improved Razer Iskur V2 is one of the most comfortable gaming chairs in the market. It also has a wider seat base, and 4D armrests. It is expensive, though.
Prism+ latest OLED TV is a nice upgrade from its previous version. Improved picture quality, a better, more upscale design, and a smoother, faster interface. Meanwhile, the price is still very competitive. What’s not to like?
It’s all about AI in the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. And while these AI-powered features are nice, and plenty useful, it’s not just the software. This Android flagship, which now comes in titanium, is also fast, and boasts outstanding camera hardware.
