Imagine cable TV without the set-top box, without lengthy contracts, but with the same hassle-free sign-up as Netflix. That’s what Eazie TV, a new live TV subscription service launched by local telco M1, is offering. Oh, and you can stream — ahem, share — Eazie TV on four devices (tablet/phone/TV) and one PC simultaneously. There are over 75 live TV channels, including stalwarts like Discovery, Nickelodeon, and AXN. All that for S$24.98 a month (S$19.98 for M1 subscribers).
Before you wonder why M1 is investing in cable TV (or linear TV in the industry parlance) in the age of cord-cutting, streaming services aren’t exactly having a good time now. Every media company wanted its own piece of the pie, resulting in a fragmented market that resembles, guess what, cable TV. The days when you can get most of the content you wanted to watch with just Netflix, the grand-daddy of streaming, are long gone. You probably have to subscribe to three, four, or even five such services.
And prices have gone up, especially for more affluent countries. For instance, Netflix’s four-device premium plan went up by S$2 in 2021 to S$21.98. The streaming service has also recently started to crack down on account sharing. In short, there’s opportunity for an enhanced cable TV service, one that removes the usual pain points. Industry experts, though, don’t see linear TV making a comeback. However, cable TV — with a few tweaks — could well co-exist with Netflix and its brethren for a long time to come.
